Expert Tips on Home Renovations and Additions: An Interview with Lorenzo Leon of Archetype Design & Construction

By Lorenzo Leon

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

When it comes to remodeling and home repair, no job is too big or small for Archetype Design & Construction. From major home renovations to simple repair work, Archetype is dedicated to providing our clients in the greater Chicago area with the highest standard of quality in workmanship and service. Our commitment is to complete every project, on time, within budget, and to the client's complete satisfaction, and we take that pledge very seriously.

We have been in business since 2001 and have established a reputation for quality. Our highly experienced team has the knowledge and expertise to take projects from concept to completion and will work with clients to create a design that fits their style and budget. From kitchens and bathroom to flooring and painting, we do it all.

What are some of the most popular renovations for homes?

It is a toss-up between kitchen and bathroom remodels. We do kitchen remodels from design to completion. Our goal is to take the client's ideas, provide our product knowledge and give them a new, complete and outstanding look. Through cabinets, solid surface counter tops, hard surface flooring, plumbing fixtures, lighting and appliances the dream kitchen is obtainable.

Bathrooms can be a client's paradise if planned properly. Their direction and our product knowledge is the path to success. Since starting business we have completed over 60 bathroom remodels. Once the client's vision is determined, together we can discuss their options keeping their target budget and time-frame in mind.

What are a few of the biggest mistakes that a contractor can make on a home renovation or addition?

Some of the biggest mistakes a contractor can make are not listening to the client's wants and needs. It's good to guide a client utilizing my expertise but you don't want to totally take over the project and end up with something they aren't 100% happy with.

In addition, time management is necessary to ensure that each project is finished on time and within the client's budget. What I quote is what the client pays. The only time there are change orders are at the request of the client. There hidden fees with Archetype.

Is there anything that homeowners can do to help prevent those mistakes?

Clients need to work closely with their contractor to explain their needs and wants, products desired and the overall end game plan. They also need to be heavily involved in picking all finishes and not afraid to ask questions during the construction process.

What is the key to great design that a homeowner is going to be happy with?

One of the key questions I ask every client is, "What will you not be sick of in 5 years?" Basically I want them to think long term with regards to the final product. I want them to be just as happy with the results 5 years later as they are on the day I complete the renovation.

Do you have any advice for hiring the right contractor to do your home renovation/addition?

When you have a contractor come into your home to give you an estimate, think of it more as an interview. Make sure they are qualified for the job and really know what they are doing. I suggest asking for references as well. Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?

I am available by phone or email at all hours of the day and night. That is another key to success, being available to clients.
