The Larry King Orchestra Strikes the Right Note At Every Event

By Pamela Sosnowski

Whether you need a string quartet for a wedding ceremony, a jazz ensemble for a cocktail party, or dancers for a fundraiser, chances are the Larry King Orchestra (LKO) has your needs covered. Although based in Northfield, the entertainment company has been serving clients worldwide for 21 years.

When owner and founder Larry King formed his company in 1997, he started with 11 hand-chosen premium musicians and vocalists to perform at private events in and around the Chicago area. Today, his orchestra consists of 22 pieces and has performed with several famous artists including Nelly and Lionel Ritchie.

Initially, launching his own private event business was never a consideration for King, who had always had a prolific music career. He fronted his own band, Human Factor, in addition to writing advertising jingles for several national brands. When he and his wife planned to have children, they wanted to raise them in the Chicago suburbs and King decided to give up touring to be able to spend more time with his family. This also meant he was open for a new gig.

"In 1997, I was approached by wedding consultants Randy Schuster and Linda Alpert who introduced me to the business and helped me launch my career," he said. "Fellow band leader Jack Kramer took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. My mentors along with the need for quality entertainment were a few of my sources of inspiration."

LKO offers a variety of orchestra, band, and DJ services for any event. A standard orchestra ranges from nine to 22 musicians, and a DJ may be added on to enhance the live music experience. All styles genres of music from pop to Motown to classical are available for live music and DJ selections. As a custom music house, King believes strongly in listening to his clients' desires and letting them have a big say in the song list they want used.

"They are the only ones that know what they like," he said. "For the family that is not sure what kind of music they want, a creative meeting a month before with some suggestion lists and a quick listen to choices prove to be very helpful. Based on the top picks and special dances, I always create a set list that is in direct correlation with our discussed timing."

Other services include specialty musicians such as trumpeters and steel drummers, emcees, silk and aerial performers, dancers, staging and lighting, and more. LKO also features a state-of-the-art recording studio called the Sound Bank equipped with two isolation booths, a live room, and a Yamaha C5 recording acoustic piano.

Although LKO has served a variety of events, most of the company's glowing testimonials hail from happy couples that hired the company to provide music for their big day. Reviews rave about how their guests' dancing never stopped, and King's topnotch communication that delivered an event beyond their expectations.

"My brides and grooms always have a vision of what their special day should look and sound like," he said. "The most successful parties are a result of a shared process. The combination of high energy, custom sets and just plain fun is how we turn dreams into reality."
