Tips For a Cross Country Move: An Interview with Heidi Newman of Golan's Moving & Storage

By Heidi Newman

Please describe a little bit about the foundation of your company.

The foundation of Golan's Moving & Storage starts and ends with people who are committed to performing the necessary tasks that will lead to a pleasing experience for our customers. As a mover, this means working hard and being conciensus of the customers possessions. As a dispatcher, this means keeping track of co-workers and equipment in order to most efficiently use those resources. As a customer relations representative, this means maintaining good customer service skills to balance the needs of the customer and those of the company. As a sales representative, this means always acting in a manner that will represent our service with a high degree of professionalism. Overall, we firmly believe that a quality organization from top to bottom will be the foundation that will be the long run success of Golan's.

What type of services do you offer to your customers?

We offer all the traditional moving services that a consumer or business expects both for local or long distance moves. In the simplest terms, men and a truck arrive at a designated time ready to move the customers' possessions. Further, we can offer packing and unpacking. If one needs storage, we have warehouse space for any size shipment. Lastly, we have expanded and are offering concierge services. Specifically, we can make arrangements for a variety of related services such as cleaning and professional organizing as well as painting and interior design, etc. We believe we can meet each consumer's needs relating to all aspects of their relocation.

Especially for long distance moving, why is it not always smart to go with the lowest quote?

Choosing the lowest quote can have a negative outcome because the required service commitments associated with the bid have a greater probability of failure. In other words, the service bid may not reflect the actual services required.

How does preparing for a long distance move differ form a local move? Should I pack differently?

Preparing for a long distance move differs from a local move in the obvious way that one's possessions will be in transit for a longer amount of time and distance. Packing should be carefully done and it is recommended to have it professionally packed. If an item is especially fragile and/or sentimental, Golan's recommends allowing us to build a unique wooden crate to protect the item even better than boxes or blankets.

What pieces of furniture should I perhaps leave behind and purchase again?

The question of whether or not to take or leave a possession is one we don't hear very often. Given each consumers discriminating tastes and preferences, it may not be appropriate for a moving company to recommend such action. Rather, shippers (customers) could ask their carrier (moving company) about the corresponding rate per pound of the shipment. With that information, a shipper can best understand and evaluate their own options about what to haul to their new location or what could be left behind.

How important is giving myself time to settle in?

While our customers enjoy the service we offer and enjoy the thrill of a new home, many do also like to put the moving process behind them quickly to get their lives back on track. According to feedback, many people finish their unpacking in the first few weeks but no one should feel pressure to unpack all at once. Of course, our unpacking service aids in this greatly as we can do all the work while the customer takes their needed time to adjust to their new home.
