Top 5 Things To Do In The Loop

By Elizabeth Elstien

"The Loop" is Chicago's main business district. Bordered by the Chicago River, the architectural structures, famous art and other local venues provide lots to see in this Chicago community. Get out and see the top 5 things to do in The Loop!

1. Art

There is a lot of free art in this city. View the numerous outdoor public sculptures by such noted artists as Pablo Picasso (at Daley Plaza) who donated his time to the city as a gift or the mosaic commissioned from Marc Chagall (at Chase Tower Plaza). Also see Anish Kapoor's modern Cloud Gate sculpture and Millennium Park.

2. Music

Although not originally from Chicago, Blues legend Muddy Waters developed the Chicago Blues style. In a city famous for its jazz and blues, listen to some national or local up-and-coming blues or jazz artists and eat dinner at one of the following music venues for a taste of Chicago:

3. Nature

At the lakefront, enjoy Grant Park and maybe listen to a free concert at the bandshell or take a ride down the Chicago River on an architecture boat tour. If in town during St. Patrick's Day, watch the river turn unnaturally green.

4. Shopping

A shopper's paradise for over 50 years, The Loop is a popular place to find all kinds of items. Some old department and other historic buildings have been turned into shopping areas. The shops at the former Marshall Field's department store are well worth the stop, as are the stores in what was once the Sullivan Center Carson Pirie Scott building. Of course, the 4-story Sears center is an ever-popular shopping attraction in The Loop.

5. Fun

Children of all ages will enjoy the Chicago Children's Museum jutting out on the water at their location on Navy Pier. Climb in a treehouse, play on a schooner, create art and build with real tools are just some of the fun things to do while here.
