Two Birds Photography Proves Two Photographers Are Better Than One

By Pamela Sosnowski

If two heads are better than one when it comes to problem solving, then two photographers may be better than one when it comes to shooting weddings. That's the concept behind Two Birds Photography of Westmont. The business is owned by husband-and-wife team Jake and Jennifer Moreland. They are the two "birds" in the name, which also alludes to the old saying about killing two birds with one stone.

With two photographers working the same wedding, the chance of capturing more candid moments increases. The couple also divides all of the duties that come with the job, such as communicating with customers and preparing images for final release to the client.

"One of our favorite aspects of working together is that we bounce ideas off one another," Jake Moreland said. "If something isn't working quite right we'll look to the other, and figure out a solution. When we shoot together, our workday is million times better. At our home office, we tag-team responsibilities. Jennifer does most of our design work and client correspondence, whereas I take creative control of the end product; editing and culling the images."

The Morelands have been photographing together for nearly a decade, having founded their business in 2008. Their own wedding two years earlier celebrated the union of a photographer and a designer. The couple is parents to three young sons and also animal lovers that have owned, cared for, and found homes for several cats and dogs through the years. Running their own business made sense and enables them to juggle professional hours with cherished family time.

They focus on wedding, engagement, family, and newborn/baby photography with a style that feels natural and devoid of your typical photography poses. As the Morelands have discovered, couples seem more receptive to hiring another couple for their photography needs because they feel a connection with them. At an event, it's just the Morelands; they don't hire out other photographers.

"We believe that because it's just us at every wedding we have a more personal connection and friendship with our couples," explained Moreland. "We like to think that this connection shows in our images and people like to see that. We also feel that our photography is simply honest. We don't know how else to put it, but feel like there is something to be said for presenting images that aren't overly processed, or filtered."

Besides making clients happy with their collection of finished images, the Morelands are extremely proud of their dedication to animal-related causes. In fact, they have committed to making a donation to their favorite animal rescue group, Second City Canine Rescue, each time they are booked for a wedding. They have also fostered and found forever homes for over 100 homeless cats and dogs in their community. Learn more about Second City at

Client testimonials rave about Two Birds' ability to create beautiful imagery even on gloomy, overcast days, the planning they put into discussing details about the special day, and how they make a photography session feel comfortable and fun. For Jake Moreland, making his clients happy is one of the best parts of his career.

"Our favorite thing is to be able to photograph all of the moments, details, and portraits and present them in a beautiful and artistic manner," he said. "It's a truly satisfying job, and we count ourselves as being incredibly lucky to be able to make our living this way!"
