Workout in the Friendly Confines of Donna's Home Fitness

By Jake Levin

No two people are alike, but the level of attention Donna Anderson gives to her fitness clients never wavers. Some people like to be pushed hard in a firm manner, Anderson said, but that might turn the next client off completely from exercise.

For the past 16 years, Anderson has learned the importance of listening to her individual clients as a personal trainer. It's why she's excelled with her business, Donna's Home Fitness, based out of Naperville.

"I think any good fitness instructor must adjust their teaching style to meet the needs of their clients," Anderson said. "It is important to listen to the client, assess their needs and goals together, put a plan in place and be flexible enough to adjust when needed."

She got her start in fitness in 2001, as she was looking for a career path that would both meet her personal interests but also allow for her to spend time with the family her and her husband planned to form. Anderson first worked in a big gym to gain practical knowledge of the ins and outs of the industry, but after the birth of her daughter in January 2004, tweaked her practice to a home based model. She would either host clients in her own home, or see them in the convenience of theirs.

"This allowed me to spend the downtime in between clients with my daughter," Anderson said.

Among the special services Anderson provides is training for both pre and post-natal women, noting that there is lots of mixed information about working out while pregnant. She said that exercise is not only important, but recommended during pregnancy.

"Exercise not only helps prepare the body for labor and delivery, but can also help with some of the common discomforts of pregnancy," Anderson said.

With both a bachelor's and master's degree in the field, Anderson's qualifications are second to none. She's loved her work every second for the last 16 years and couldn't imagine doing anything else.

"I love working with people of all ages and I have experience in helping people with a wide variety of limitations," Anderson said. "I enjoy getting to know each and every one of my clients, and making our workouts fun and effective."
